The Difference of Chemical Component

304 and 316L stainless steel are both austenitic stainless steels, which are mainly distinguished by the content of Mo and C elements.

Mo element: The key element of 316L stainless steel.It contains 2.0%-3.0% Mo, but 304 stainless steel doesn’t contain Mo.

C element: Both are low carbon steels, but the "L" in 316L stands for "Low Carbon", and its carbon content is strictly controlled at ≤0.03%, which is lower than ≤0.08% in 304.

The Comparison of Corrosion Resistance

In the inland environment, the performance of 304 stainless steel is not much different from that of 316L stainless steel. We can choose 304 stainless steel with higher cost performance. Because 316L contains Mo and more Ni, the price is about twice as high as 304 stainless steel. However, in coastal and high PH environments, the corrosion resistance of 316L is unmatched by 304 stainless steel.
